A haiku for Spring (2023)

The bluebells are back.

Their caravan pauses here;

they know this place.

We did this walk again yesterday and the bluebells were superb. There’s an ethereal quality about them which no photo can fully capture – it’s something to with the haze of colour I think, and the stillness; perhaps the faint scent as well.

  1. We walked and climbed for about an hour before reaching a small sheltered plateau protected from all sides from the ocean winds and here, today, stood a field of small flowers, waist high, beckoning this way and that as we walked gently amongst them.

      • Not long after we came upon the precipice.. hundreds of feet to the valley floor. Two of us reclined with our feet over the edge, the others stayed well back, flowers forgotten and the in the distance a uniform line of even swells was beating into the coast. Going back down was a disorganised and hurried affair ..

  2. I’m jealous, John. We have some early flowers, but they are predicting snow showers tonight.

    • In my imagination, Spring in Wisconsin is a sudden blaze of colours and scents. I hope it is just around the corner for you Tom.

  3. love the metaphor of the caravan – it is always a pause or so it seems as bluebells are gone too soon. Last time I saw such a wealth of blue haze (camera never captures it) was at a Dorset caravan and camping site!

    • Thanks Laura. That image of the caravan came from somewhere beyond me but seemed utterly right. As you say, it’s almost impossible to capture the haze of bluebells on camera – although you can probably manage better than most of us.

  5. This haiku transports one to a realm of awareness where the bluebells become real. Great work!
