Never mind the latest fuss about Robin Hood, or Robin Longstride, let’s consider things from the perspective of his old adversary. These verses are just for fun …
LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE SHERIFF OF NOTTINGHAM
Framed by acres of desk
he lets his gaze
sweep around
the castle’s executive suite.
He keeps his visitors waiting,
while young PAs
dally with news
of rumours on the street.
Arrived at last!
For years he’s worked and schemed
for such a post:
his coat of arms displayed
outside the door,
the horse of which he dreamed,
the deferential men
and willing maids.
So why these tummy pains?
That miscreant Hood,
that gang-land boss
and master of PR,
is only half the story.
Rival knights
would have him out of office
if they could;
his wife grows bitter;
the king is raising the bar on
targets, new objectives,
nouveau jargon.
Pity the poor sheriff
and his sleepless nights.
I’m sure David Cameron could fiond a place for him in the new coalition..! I like your juxtaposition of rich, redolent words like ‘rival knights’, and ‘coats-of-arms’ with arid modern jargon; the men in grey suits are the real enemies of us all! Light verse, perhaps, but there’s still plenty of substance: I really like it.
